Craggy Island Triathlon 2017

I travelled to the Isle of Kerrera for the Craggy Island Triathlon

Kerrera is an island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides, close to the town of Oban. It has a population of around 45 residents and on the 7th and 8th of October Durty events and the Isle hosts the  Craggy Island Triathlon.

The same course is run over the two days with the competitors lining up on the mainland shore with the first leg being a 550m swim across to the Isle.

From there it is a quick change to mountain bike and a 14km off-road dirt fest, as you navigate the off-road course. It was not long until the first riders return covered in mud and a big smile.

With a quick change over it is off on the 8km run that takes you up to the highest point on the island Carn Breugach at 189 m.

You then hurtle down a steep and spongy trail, past Gylen Castle to a meandering run along a 4x4  path back to the finish.

For many, this is done solo but there is also a relay as well as a Kids version.

I went to spectate, support and take a bit of footage but was pulled into the event due to a late illness so ran the last leg for the Oban Mountain Goats team.

So glad I was able to run in such a beautiful part of Scotland and was impressed by the flowing trails and friendly atmosphere.

The event is a beautiful collaboration between the locals, Durty Events and the Oban Mountain rescue team.

You are welcomed in by friendly and exuberant supporters and volunteers. It truly is an experience unique to this part of the world. As I took part in the relay team this video is just a few moments of the event.

So Pack your bags, hit the water and get caught up amongst the Craggy Island Triathlon.

I hope in some small way this inspires you to get out and enjoy the benefits of the outdoors.

All the best in your adventures!

Cheers Douglas
